At Hidden Valley Bed and Breakfast in Whitehorse, Yukon, we believe that a comfortable stay for our guests shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment. We’re committed to providing a warm and eco-friendly experience, and we’ve taken significant steps to make our house more energy-efficient.

Our Journey to Sustainability: Over the years, we’ve embarked on a journey to enhance both the comfort and sustainability of our B&B. Let’s walk you through the exciting changes we’ve made:

A Modern Heating Solution: Our first step was to bid farewell to our 42-year-old combination wood/oil burning boiler. It served us well, but it was time for an upgrade. We replaced it with a state-of-the-art oil burner. This not only ensures better heating but also reduces our environmental footprint.

Cozying Up the Living Room: One of the most exciting revelations came when we decided to replace our 42-year-old wood-burning fireplace in the living room. What we discovered was astonishing – there was absolutely no insulation in the chimney chase! For years, we were unknowingly blowing hot air into the Yukon Wilderness. Now, in its place, we have a beautiful, fully insulated propane-heated fireplace. It’s not just energy-efficient; it also adds a cozy and inviting atmosphere to the room.

Lighting the Way with LED: Our next step was a bright one – we transitioned to LED lighting. With approximately 150 electrical light outlets across our property, this switch had a significant impact. Our most recent electrical bill was $200.00 lower than the previous month. It’s a testament to the cost-saving and eco-friendly benefits of LED technology.

Preparing for Winter: As winter approaches in the Yukon, we wanted to ensure our guests stay warm and snug. To achieve this, we added new and more insulation to our attic. The effectiveness of this upgrade will soon be put to the test, but we’re optimistic it will make a noticeable difference.

Our commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability isn’t just about reducing costs; it’s about providing a responsible and enjoyable experience for our guests. We believe that by making these changes, we’re not only enhancing the comfort of our B&B but also contributing to a greener future.
