Aurora season in the Yukon runs roughly from September to mid-April, when dark nights return, and the sky becomes an open canvas. To get the most out of your experience, it helps to understand how each part of the season feels. Keep these simple tips in mind when booking your stay.
September to October – The Early Season
Nights grow colder and darker, and the aurora returns after summertime brightness. Conditions can be excellent, and travellers enjoy pairing aurora viewing with comfortable daytime activities like hiking or sightseeing.
November to February – Peak Aurora Season
This is the most reliable time of year for aurora viewing. With long, dark nights and crisp winter air, the lights often appear brightly and more frequently. Temperatures can be cold, but with proper clothing, the experience is incredible.
March to Mid-April – Bright Days, Beautiful Nights
This is a favourite time for many travellers. Days are longer and warmer, perfect for exploring the region, while nights are still dark enough for strong aurora activity. Many guests come during this period for the balance between daytime adventure and nighttime magic.
How long should you stay?
The aurora is a natural phenomenon, so viewing can never be guaranteed. We recommend staying two to four nights to improve your chances. Many guests see the lights at least once during their stay, and some see them multiple times.
